Past Feature Artists

Stephen P. Koelsch

Steve has had good success with several juried shows, and his work is available at several local galleries. He has also enjoyed solo shows in the Cleveland Tremont area, the Newark Art Center, and the University of Delaware. His unique art is created using a technique called 'clay monoprinting', invented by nationally acclaimed artist, Mitch Lyons. The results are very bright and colorful one-of-a-kind monoprints. You can also view his work at yessy.com, by searching for his name, or clay monoprints. Steve is also the author of two books of poetry: Dancing Bare, and The Cold Wick, published by Traffor Publishing. His books are available to order through any bookstore, including the internet sites of Amazon, B&N, and Borders. Steve has also been fortunate in having numerous individual poems in regional and national magazines and anthologies.

Clay Monoprint Process

Clay monoprints are unique and colorful one-of-a-kind prints. A flat clay slab is inlayed with clay slip (semi-liquid clay) using various techniques. The color palette is created by adding various industrial colorants to white china clay slip. The printing process is achieved by controlling moisture and pressure. The image is printed onto a material called Remay, which is a man-made synthetic material with unique properties that allow the colors to bind to it. This creates a color-fast, virtually waterproof print, that will maintain its vibrancy for a lifetime. The prints are monoprints, because no two prints can ever be the same, due to the 3-dimensional binding of material to the Remay. After drying, an oil-based fixative is applied to seal the print.
